Embracing My Inner Artist: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

Today, I want to write about something that’s been on my mind a lot lately: imposter syndrome. If you’ve explored other parts of my website, you probably know I come from a very left-brained, structured career path. My identity has been deeply tied to my work in finance—I’m a CPA, and I’ve held senior leadership roles at both the University of North Carolina and Duke University. That’s a big part of who I am, but lately, I’ve been exploring a different side of myself.

What am I doing calling myself an artist?

This question came up recently when I was chatting with my nephew. I was showing him some of my latest paintings and found myself saying, “I know I’m not an artist, but…” In that moment, it hit me: I need to stop saying that.

The truth is, I am an artist. I’m creating, learning, and most importantly, loving every minute of the process. It’s not about labels or external validation—it’s about the joy that comes from doing something you truly enjoy. And I am joyfully obsessed with painting and creating right now.

So here’s my message for today: If something brings you joy, do it. Some people will love what you create, and others will not—and that’s okay. What matters most is that you’re enjoying the journey.

I’ll leave you with a quote from Vincent Van Gogh that resonates deeply with me:
"If you hear a voice within you saying 'you are not a painter,' then by all means paint… and that voice will be silenced."

Let’s keep creating, silencing those doubts, and embracing the joy of the process.

Have a great day,
